THE GATELEYS IN ALMA
![]() |
|
| Alma: Most of the Gateleys lived in the
area west of the little pond shown in the enclosed region. Orville
lived in the southern part of town.
The population of Alma during the Gateley period was much less than that indicated on this map. |
The Alma Region:
The Buckskin cemetery is where Sydney and Fred Gateley are buried. In the summer of 1947 when Kith and Bill Gateley were living in Alma, they spent some pleasant moments messing around in Criterion Lake Also note the South London Mine, where Sydney was superintendent for many years and which undoubtedly precipitated the influx of the Gateleys into Alma. The road #783 goes over Mosquito Pass to Leadville--a route much traveled by the Rev. John Dyer. |
[Note: the 1930 population of Alma was 110; of Fairplay, 218.]
|
[Note: Sydney used the two-e version of his family name; most of the others, the one-e] |
