Business Leader, Churchman Passes In Rochester
William Carey Briggs, 88, for many years prominent in business and church affairs in Jamestown, died on Monday evening at the home of his son, Edward M. Ogden. in Rochester. He had made his home there for several month since the death last year of his wife, Gertrude M. Ogden Briggs.

Surviving are are two other sons, Jesse S. Ogden of Charlottesville, VA., and Terrance M. Ogden of Schenectady.

Mr. Briggs was married twice. His first wife, Minnie Elizabeth Clement Briggs, died in 1919. Several years later he married Gertrude M. Ogden, widow of Rev. Horace G. Ogden, former pastor of the First Methodist Church. She died last May.

One of his sisters, the late Frances Wade, married Arthur C. Wade of Jamestown. Another sister, the late Martha May Briggs, was a well known teacher in Jamestown High School for many years.

Mr. Briggs was born June 5, 1866 in Ellington, the son of Carey and Martha Anna Staples Briggs. He was graduated from JHS with the class of 1888. He studied law for a year in the offices of Cook, Fisher and Wade. Later he formed a partnership with the late Fred E. Hatch and operated a drug store under the name of Hatch and Briggs and, located at 10 East Third Street, developed a large volume of business.

Two years after the turn of the century, Mr. Briggs sold his interest in the store to Mr. Hatch to become secretary-treasurer and later general manager of the Chautauqua Towel Mills, Inc., of which his late brother-in-law, the late Arthur C. Wade, was president. The mill was located on Steele Street. He continued in active charge of the business until 1919 when he and his associates sold the business. At a later period, Mr. Briggs was engaged in the life insurance business for a few years.

A devoted member of the first Methodist Church since he came to Jamestown from Ellington, Mr. Briggs served the church in many official capacities and was at one time chairman of its board of trustees. He represented the church on several occasions as lay delegate to the annual meeting of the Erie Conference.

He was one of the organizers of the Jamestown Community Chest, served on its board of directors for several years, and had an active part in its early years. He was a former director of the Bank of Jamestown. He also took a deep interest in various community and civic groups.

The remains will be sent here and the funeral will be held at 2 P.M. at the First Methodist. Dr. Harold A. McCurdy and Dr. Terrance M. Ogden will officiate. Burial will be in the family lot in Lake View Cemetery. Arrangements are in charge of Partridge Funeral Home.
