FATHERS DAY CELEBRATION

The Gateleys all went into Rochester for Fathers Day. The Spitals are already arrived from Brooklyn, New York, where they visited Dr. Spital's parents.  The Roses came over for dinner.  The entire group enjoyed a delicious Fathers Day dinner prepared by Mrs. Ogden.  Mr. Ogden (Grand-daddy? Dad?) couldn't have dinner with them because he was sick even though he was the father being celebrated.

BIG RAIN AT OAKDENE

The rain poured torrents on Oakdene Friday morning. The Gateleys had thought that they were well prepared but discovered they were not when a volume of water swept in the kitchen door and flooded the kitchen and bathroom..  Mrs. Gateley was heard muttering things under her breath which this reporter feels it is best not to repeat.

The Gateleys were late getting off to Wolcott, but are pleased to report that the road held up beautifully and was not washed away as Ned Gateley had feared.

WORK ON CORRAL FENCE STARTED

Work was started on the corral fence Wednesday and Thursday by Ned and Mrs. Gateley.  After a certain amount of confusion due to Brian Gateley who disliked being lost in the grass, Kithie Gateley was hired as baby sitter, and the work went on with reasonable success.  Due to the ingenuity of Ned Gateley, not to mention his mother, the west and south sides of  the fence have been repaired, and it is hoped that the east and north will be finished Sunday.  All the Ogden grandchildren in the vicinity are awaiting the arrival of Lucky, Star, and Crescent from Mrs. Reed's pony farm. (Lucky will bring her newest bay with her, and Star is expecting in August.)

Ned Gateley and his mother guarantee that no fence has ever presented such interesting and unusual variations!

ARRIVAL OF MR. AND MRS. OGDEN LOOKED FOR

Everyone connected with Oakdene is hopefully awaiting the arrival of Mr. and Mrs. Ogden from Rochester.  It is the consensus of opinion that Oakdene simply doesn't feel right without them.

Typing thanks to Mrs. Gateley

Some letters from Ned to Bill - 1960 (Bill was at Stillwater, Oklahoma, finishing up his Ph.D.)
Dear Daddy

Here is the diary I said I was going to write.  I didn't write every little thing, but I did write the interesting things.

Saturday June 6th

Uncle Sid came this afternoon and surprised us.  Aunt Polly hadn't been expecting him until Wednesday, or around in there.

Sunday, June 7th

Aunt Helen got tonsillitis.  Nothing else of any interest happened today though.

Monday, June 8th

Grandaddy got to come home today.  He is very much interested in the puppets.  Now Mommy thinks we can go out to the lake tomorrow.  But when she called up Mr. Reed, he said he probably wouldn't have the road fixed till Thursday.  We are going to try to go out Wednesday though.  We all got some sneakers today to.  P.S.  Grandmommy & Granddaddy paid for them.

Tuesday, June 9th

Nothing much happened today.

Wednesday, June 10th

Mommy says we will have to go tomorrow because we will spend all today getting ready.

Thursday, June 11th

We were busy all morning loading up the cars.  (Grandmommy made pancakes for breakfast, and were they good.)  We had lunch in Rochester too.  When we got in we worked just as hard as unloading as we did loading.  When we tried to get the car down to our cabin, it was alright, but getting up again was a different problem.  Well anyhow we got stuck.  I got out to push, and we almost had it when Uncle Sid came over and helped get us out.  When I was helping put the canvas up on the guest cabin, I saw a turtle and caught it.  I think it is a snapping turtle.  At about 10:00 Aunt Polly and Uncle Sid went swimming.

Friday, June 12th

This morning the turtle was gone.  We looked all over for it but we couldn't find it.  Nothing much interest happened today.

This was kind of short I guess.  I'll try to do better next time.

         Love,

             Ned

Dear Daddy.

Here is my second diary of the week of, well from the 13th to the 19th.

Saturday, June 6th

Grandmommy and Granddaddy came out this morning with Debi.

Sun

Aunt Helen and Uncle Bill came today with Gregory.  Then when Kithie and Debi and I were out cutting the pony path, Granddaddy's car went by.  We stopped them and asked what what was going on.  Aunt Polly said that Granddaddy had had another relapse.

Monday

We went into Wolcott today.

Tuesday

Aunt Helen and Kelly came out today.  Aunt Polly and Uncle Sid left for Brooklyn tonight (P.S. the weather has been bad ever since Friday)

Wednesday

It sure seems quiet out here now that the Spitals have gone.  We went into Wolcott.

Thursday

Kithie, Chris & I walked up to put some mail in the mail box.  When we got about 5 ft from the gate, we could see where they worked on the road because it (the road) went like this (a drawing shows the road widening out, then thinning back and then widening out again and finally thinning back before going on).  They had cleared away the trees and stuff all around that place & it doesn't look like the same road.  When we got over it to Mrs. Reeds, we saw Hollace.  He says that he cleared away the land so the road would dry out.

Wednesday P.S.

I got my film.  None of the pictures came out.

Friday

Well, I guess thats all for this week.

Love, Ned
