We returned to Alma and spent the summer there from June 16th to September 11th.

Bill's dad provided them with a job for Bill, a house, and the Hoopey -- a two-door Modal A Ford.  Kith soon located the Alma Library and did a fair amount of reading over the summer.

The sanitary facility was a duplex outhouse, the other half being occupied -- sometimes literally -- by the Mexican family living next door (the outhouse was located halfway between us and them.

During this summer Bill sorted ore, which means sitting on a mine dump, picking up a rock, looking at it and deciding whether it contained some good minerals or not.  In the former case, it was tossed into a special pile; otherwise back to the dump in a different place.  Unfortunately, he got an infection in a finger which brought a trip to the doctor in Fairplay and an end to the job.

We did a little rafting on Criterion Lake, up on a ledge on the west side of Buckskin Gulch, west of Alma

Before we left Alma, we also fell heir to the cat, Gizmo, who we found inside the Hoopey on June 22. He caught a lot of flies for us.  He went back to Colorado Springs with us in the fall but shortly afterwards was hit by a car and killed.
