Dear Bill Gately, I received your letter [regarding Esther Gilmore] this afternoon and will give a short response now as I'm getting ready to leave for Williamsburg, VA for a week -- Spring Break. I've hunted for exact quote of information, but (of course) it has eluded me. Here is what I can find and which is not exact quote: From Pelham, Massachusetts: Robert Gilmore married Dorothy Gray (sister of Matthew Gray) 1754. From Boston Transcript: They had two daughters: Esther and Martha. They lived in White Creek and Cambridge. Church records: Esther married Alexander Andre in Cambridge, 12 July 1792. Dorothy Gray Gilmore was a member of Protestant Presbyterian Congregation of Cambridge, suspended from membership in 1792 and restored 4 March 1800. Notice that Esther married Alexander "Andre" (not Andrew). Whether this was a misprint or not, you may need to look for name Andre. I do think that I have a bit more information about Esther and/or her sister Martha -- possibly children. When I return from my trip, I'll hunt some more. All my materials are in boxes, and since I had not been able to prove that this was our line, I have kept it separate. I have tried on several occasions to find a relationship between this Robert Gilmore and my husband's George Gilmore. Our George married Elizabeth Blair in Pelham, 1765. The fact that both families were in Cambridge would possibly indicate some relationship. Thanks for your letter, and I will be in touch in a couple of weeks. Jean Gilmore |

Bill, I'm glad that I could be of some help to you, and would certainly hope that we can someday connect your Robert and our George - possibly brothers. Gilmore Ave. in Cambridge was named after members of our family. Martin Gilmore house still stands today on the corner of Gilmore Ave. It is now on the national historic registry. The bible records of William Gilmore and Else (Alice) Moore are ones which we have copies of. Here is our line as far back as we know it, but I have not received the documented sources for the first two generations.
This George Gilmore is the man who was one of the town officers in information which you sent. I have not been able to identify the Robert Gilmore who married Dolly Gray. There was also a Robert Gilmore who married Jean Gray in Pelham, and I've tried to connect that family also, but without any luck so far. The last that I can find them is in Stamford, Bennington Co., Vt. I'll get some copies made of the Gray material and mail it next week. Keep in touch. Jean |

Bill, I'm retyping the four pages on Gray Family as I can barely read my photocopy, so I know another copy would not be good. It will take awhile longer. I'm going to tell you the source as you may be able to get a copy of the source as this is not complete. "The Ancestry of Samuel, Heda, and John Warner", by Frederick Chester Warner, Boston, typescript, 1940, pp. 255-258. Another source is: Gray Newsletter. I saw Volume 11, 1952, at Kansas Historical Society several years ago, but have not found any other issues. M.D. Raymond also has material on Gray Family. I think this may be a book. I think I also saw his name in connection with the Gray Newsletter. I do not know the name of the father of Dorothy Gray Gilmore. More later. Jean |

Dear Bill, From article titled: MEMBERS OF OTHER REGIMENTS WHICH FOUGHT AT SARATOGA by Michael J. O'Brien. The names hereunder listed are taken from incomplete rolls of the New York, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Connecticut regiments which participated in the two engagements at Saratoga. It cannot be stated definitely, however, that every man here listed actually fought in these battles; that could be determined only by tracing each man's period of service: James Gilmore Private 1st Regt. New Hampshire Cont. Line Robert Gilmore Private 3rd Regt. New York Cont. Line Thomas Gilmore Private 1st Regt. New Hampshire Cont. Line MORGAN'S RIFLEMEN AT THE BATTLE OF SARATOGA by Michael J. O'Brien There were 232 Irishmen who served under Morgan at Saratoga, more than 45% of the maximum number of men who served with the regiment. (This is a list compiled by O'Brien from what he called "reliable sources) George Gilmore Private Company No. 2 Francis Gray Private Company No. 2 ------ If you want to see where the lots in Pelham were located, find a copy of Parmenter's book, History of Pelham. I'll put some materials in regular mail, probably on Tuesday. Jean |

Dear Jean: I'm trying to get my act together with all the information which I have received from you and a couple of other sources. I earlier received from Janey E. Joyce, a "Worcester Researcher" I found on the GenWeb (Worcester Co., MA), some John Gray material which steered me to the local library where I found the Detroit Society stuff as well as a typewritten copy of the same material which had been presented to the library by a Ruth Thayer Ravenscroft (who, by a "it's a small world" coincidence, lived a block or so away from where I grew up in Colorado Springs - I remember the family name but not its specific members). In any event, I am well supplied with info about John Gray and his descendants who do not seem to include Dorothy Gray. Marcus Denison Raymond (1833-1911) wrote "Gray Genealogy: being a genealogical record and history of the descendants of John Gray, of Beverly, Mass., and also including sketches of other Gray Families / by M. D. Raymond. Tarrytown, N.Y. : M. D. Raymond, 1887". I located this at the CSL Sutro Library and will attempt to get a loan from them through our local library; they have it on microfiche so I don't anticipate any problems. In case you want to get it yourself and have access to a local library which could order it, the call number at Sutro is "MICRO-FICHE G3 G972"; otherwise, let me know it you want me to look for anything for you. I ran across the following Gray book in the Sutro catalog. Are you familiar with it? It may or may not be available for loan as it is a hard-bound book rather than a micro copy. ---------------------START----- Palmer, Orlando Gray, 1864- Three centuries of the Gray family in America : genealogical sketches of Colonel Hosea Wilson Gray, and his brother Orlando Noah Gray, their ancestors and their descendants, together with other descendants of... CSL Sutro MICRO- FILM 259 Reel 106 Book 432 -------------------------------------END ----- I checked for "The Ancestry of Samuel, Heda, ..." book but could not find it locally or at Denver or CSL (California State Library). There is certainly a lot of detail in the pages that you sent me, but it doesn't appear that the #1 John Gray is my man. Dorothy's father has to be floating around there somewhere, but I was unable to find any Dorothy in Anna Warner's Gray treatise (I went through all of John's children and grandchildren). Parmenter's "History of Pelham ... " is at Sutro but not locally. I think I'll hold off trying to get him for awhile. I've been in touch with Laura Hulslander in Washington County. She sent me the Presbyterian Church references which you had sent me earlier. She also added my request to the Wachington Co. web page as a query and suggested that I get in touch with you. Enough for now. Thanks again for everything. I'll certainly be in touch if I encounter anything of interest. Bill |
