Questions and Speculations

Why wasn't William in the 1850 Census? His four children listed in the 1860 census were born in IA between 1845 and 1849+/-. There are also no Kendalls (Kindles?) which there should have been (William Wilson Kendall m. Theodocia Wood in 1847 in Mt. Pleasant). It appears that part of this census has been lost!!

The Clk Dis Ct has b rec from 1880 (no interest to me probably) and m, d, div, pro, civ ct & adoption rec from 1836; Co Rcdr has lnd rec from 1836. William & Sarah's marriage cert., death cert., probate, land records

I wrote for W & S; got a reply and the certificate from Doris Sharp, a Gen. Soc. Corr. Sec'y. She will do more research for modest fees—let's take advantage of her—e.g.:

Marriage Certificate for William Wilson and Sarah Melton

Wm&SarahMarriage.jpg (99020 bytes)

Note: The certificate says that the wedding was held at John Melton's house. This strongly suggests that John was Sarah's father and is consistent with the statement in the Portrait that John was not a church member—hence the marriage at a home by a JP.
