Mrs. Gertrude M. Briggs, 84, of 9 Chestnut Street, wife of William C. Briggs, formerly prominent in business and community activities here, died at 6:30 A.M. today in her home.

She was born Jan. 6, 1879 in Lafayette, Ind., daughter of Rev. William R. and Mrs. Mikels.

Mrs. Briggs was graduated from DePauw University, Greencastle, Ind., and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, scholastic honorary society and Kappa Alpha Theta, national social sorority there. She served as Kappa Alpha Theta's first national president.

Mrs. Briggs was long active in the First Methodist Church and its societies when her first husband, the late Rev. Dr. Horace G. Ogden, served as its pastor here from 1907 until the fall of 1914. She organized the Ogden Bible Class of this church, and it is one of the largest today.

Mrs. Briggs lived in Rochester and Albany after leaving Jamestown in the fall of 1914 and returned here in 1925 when she married William Briggs.

She was formerly active in the D.A.R., Fortnightly, and College Club and was a charter member of the Browning Society.

Surviving are three sons, Jesse S. Ogden, Charlottesville, Va., Rev. Dr. Tarrence Ogden, pastor, Trinity Methodist Church, Schenectady, and Edward M. Ogden, Rochester; a sister, Mrs. Grace M. Levings, Paris, Ill.; eight grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.

Her son, Rev. Dr. Tarrence Ogden will officiate at funeral services at 3 P.M. Thursday from Partridge Funeral Home. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery.
