| A memorial service will be held today for Dr. Theodore
I. Anderson of Lexington, a psychiatrist who was formerly assistant
commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health.
Dr. Anderson died Saturday in Lowell General Hospital after apparently suffering a heart attack while competing in a boat race on the Merrimack River. He was 70. Born in Iowa City, Dr. Anderson graduated from Harvard College in 1951 and the University of Michigan Medical School. After moving to Lexington from San Mateo, Calif., in 1968, he was assistant commissioner of the Department of Mental Health for seven years before becoming medical director of Stoney Brook Counseling Center and the Boston Institute for Psychology. He was a member of the staffs at Massachusetts General, Winchester, Emerson, Waltham, and Choate-Symmes hospitals, and taught at the Center for Psychoanalytic Studies and Harvard Medical School. Dr. Anderson was a member of the board of Directors of the Northeastern Society for Group Psychotherapy and was involved in the governance of the American Group Psychotherapy Association. An outdoorsman who enjoyed mountain climbing, kayaking, and skiing, he was a member of the Cambridge Boat Club. He leaves his wife, Cynthia P.; two daughters, Sandra Storer of Lincoln and Karyn Anderson of Baltimore, two sons, Scott of Golden, Colo., and Brett of Atkinson, N.H.; a sister, Janet Twente of Missouri, and five grandchildren.
