Mrs. Jess Oakley Laid To Rest Thursday
With her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Peabody, she came to Summit
County in 1873 settling at Preston, near Gold Run. This trip was made over
Boreas Pass, on horseback, each parent carrying one child in their
arms. Later with her family she moved to Golden, Colorado where the early years
of her life were spent. Later her
family moved to Como and finally located in Breckenridge.
In 1896 she married Justin G. Oakley. Two children Melvin and Clyde were born to
this union, Melvin preceding his mother in death
three years ago.
She leaves to mourn her death, her husband, Jess; one
daughter, Mrs. Rosetta Sheppard of Hutchinson, Kansas; one son, Clyde Oakley,
of Colorado Springs; a brother, E. C. Peabody, of the Blue; one sister, Mrs.
York of Colorado Springs and one grandson and a host of friends.
Mrs. Oakley has been an active member of the Mt. Helen
Rebekah Lodge of Breckenridge for a, number of years.
Being a real pioneer of Summit County she has a host of
friends and was beloved by all who knew her.
She has lived a useful life, ever ready to help others in time of trouble, asking nothing for herself. She was tolerant, generous, forgiving and
contributed in many ways to the community in which she lived. The passing of "Mother Oakley" as
She was known to many will be a lose not only to her
immediate family but to her many friends she has in the county.
Interment was at Valley Brook Cemetery, Thursday afternoon. Pallbearers were: Frank Brown, Ralph David, Earl Rice, Charles W. Burnheimer, T. C. Moran and D. F. Miner |
