The Voyage to America--The S. S. China

The Ship and the Passenger Manifest

The S.S. China carried the York family from Liverpool, arriving in New York City April 27, 1870.

The New York City check-in point for immigrants from 1856 to 1892 was Castle Gardens, located at the Battery along the southern tip of Manhattan.

A portion of the ship's manifest at New York shows the names of the Thomas York family (#159 - 167).

The entries in the right-hand column show "steerage", which is the accommodation allotted to the passengers who travel at the cheapest rate.

The next-to-last entry in the list below is "Henry" which was Harry York's original name and "Harry" was a nickname.  He was born on October 17, 1868 in Piddington, England, and so was about 1-1/2 years old when the trip to New York was made.
